How to Avoid Altitude Sickness in Cusco: Practical & Medical Guide

Altitude sickness (locally known as soroche) is one of the main concerns for travelers arriving in Cusco (3,400 m / 11,150 ft above sea level). However, with proper preparation and simple habits, you can acclimate seamlessly and enjoy your Andean expedition hassle-free.

1. Take the First Day Easy

Upon arrival in Cusco, avoid heavy physical exertion for the first 6 to 12 hours. Rest in your hotel, stroll gently, and allow your body to adapt to the lower oxygen concentration.

2. Embrace Coca and Muña Herbal Teas

Traditional Andean herbal teas such as Coca Tea (Mate de Coca) and Muña (Andean mint) act as natural vasodilators. They relieve headaches, boost blood circulation, and soothe digestion.

3. Stay Intensely Hydrated

At higher elevations, breathing is quicker and humidity is lower, causing rapid fluid loss. Drink plenty of water (at least 2 to 3 liters daily) and avoid alcohol during your first two days.

4. Opt for Light Meals Initially

Digestion slows down significantly at high altitudes. Choose light soups, fresh vegetables, and complex carbohydrates. Save heavy culinary feasts for day two or three.

5. Consider Preventive Medication

If you are sensitive to high altitudes, consult your physician regarding Acetazolamide. Taking it 24 hours prior to reaching Cusco can substantially reduce symptoms.

With these proven tips, your journey through the ancient Inca empire will be smooth, vibrant, and unforgettable!
